UWUA Power For America Conference: Organizing for our Future
Utility Workers gear up for an industry on the move
|
Union Built PC is providing computer workshops for a number of delegates at the Utility Workers Union of America's very first Organizing Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the photograph, newly appointed Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis speaks to the conference attendees. "We need to bring the Deparment of Labor back into business, and restore its dignity" said Ms. Solis. "The Obama administration is planning 5 million new jobs...green jobs...and green jobs cannot be outsourced. We will keep those jobs here!' She also told the delegates that "the focus of this administration is to get America back to work," which was met with a standing ovation.
Mike Langford, President of the UWUA, announced the newly created Power For America Training Trust Fund in his opening remarks, which is a fund created specifically to train Utility Workers in job skills and especially in the new "green" technology field. "New and emerging technologies present the opportunity to create good-paying, unionized domestic jobs in an otherwise bleak economy," said Langford.
